Time Blocking Tips

Time blocking is a way of scheduling your time. It involves using chunks of time designated for specific actions or tasks throughout the day. Time blocking means throwing multitasking out the window in exchange for very focused and very effective single task work.

Time Blocking

I have seen fantastic results when implementing time blocking into our personal and professional lives. I have also learned a few lessons along the way and we want to share them with you.

  1. Your time is valuable. Treat it that way. Be careful in choosing what to spend your time on. Choose what matters and what aligns with your goals.

  2. Remove ALL distractions. That may mean leaving your phone turned to "Do Not Disturb" mode and placed in another room. It may mean locking yourself in a private library study room. Whatever is necessary, do it. Remove anything and everything from your work space that will prevent you from giving your full focus and attention.

  3. Set reasonable amounts of time. No one wants to email for 2 hours straight or write content for 8 hours non-stop. Set smaller, but more frequent time blocks for items that are ongoing.

  4. Done is more important than perfect. Perfection is an illusion and if we spend too much time trying to get something just right, we miss out on other chances to either be productive or relax and enjoy time with our families. Done is the goal.

  5. Write out your time block schedule and set timers if necessary.

  6. Schedule time for nothing. Yes, you read that correctly. Give yourself 30 minutes each week for simply thinking, clearing your head, taking a deep breath. Keep a piece of paper and pen nearby to jot down thoughts you don't want to forget. Some of my greatest ideas have come from time blocks of nothing.
